Fort Kochi

There are quite a few attractions in Fort Kochi. Some of the well-known attractions are as follows:

  • Beach : A stroll on the beach is really a romantic experience. If you are at the beach then do try till the sun starts setting into the lap of the sea, with the Chinese fishing nets and sailing ships in the foreground. This beach is a favorite among locals and tourists alike. You can witness many European style bungalows along the shoreline of the beach.

  • Chinese Fishing Nets: The Cheenaval, a.k.a. the Chinese fishing nets have been a unique characteristic of Kochi. Chinese traders introduced these nets to Kerala long time back. It is said that apart from China, these nets can only be seen in Kochi, Kerala. It is fun to see the fishermen using these nets to catch fish.

  • Vasco House : One of the oldest Portuguese houses in India, the Vasco House was built in the early sixteenth century. It is situated on Rose Street, Kochi. It is believed that the great Portuguese explorer, Vasco da Gama lived in this house, hence the name Vasco House. The house is adorned by European glass paned windows and balcony.

  • Thakur House : The Thakur House, earlier known as Kunal or Hill Bungalow was built on the site of the sea facing Gelderland Bastion in the late 1700s. This house truly depicts the colonial era. It is located amidst neatly manicured lawns. You can witness the beauty of Dutch architecture at the Thakur House.

  • St. Francis Church: One of the oldest churches in India, the St. Francis Church was built by the Europeans. This church is believed to have been built in 1503. It was believed that Vasco da Gama was buried here till his son shifted the remains to Portugal after around 14 years. The site where he was said to have been buried has been clearly marked out.

  • Santa Cruz Basilica : History states that the Portuguese built the original church in 1505, and named it as a cathedral in 1558. However, the British, during their reign, destroyed the original cathedral in 1795. The current structure that you can witness was built in 1905. In 1984, the Basilica status was bestowed to the Santa Cruz church by Pope John Paul II.
